The represention ethnic minorities in magazines

Are magazines representing ethnic minorities fairly?

This research was carried out by me, Nosa and Cheyne under the supvision of our teacher Ms Tonminson. Flicking through a magazine, in this case Glamour magazine, we counted and tallied the amount of ethnic people to the number white people pictured throughout each page of the magazine. This is called secondary research. Once we had finished counting we are sad to say we were'nt surprised by the result; it came to 310 white people to only 41 enthnic people, this meant that for every ethnic person we spotted there were almost 8 whtes. Although at first glance this may seem a little 'racist', with our research we have to take in acount that the Uk is prodomanently white, but in many areas can be very multicultural. By knowing this we realised that our results matched up to the population of the uk and became slightly less critical of Glamour magazine.

Our research technique was fairly basic and straight forward, although this gave us a clear and workable result, we recognised that there were things we could do to improve it. It lacked detail to which we should have expanded on, taking our amatierish talley into a comprehesive study of enthic minorities in the media. This included looking at sub groups of ethnic people and the way they looked and dressed.
